Excerpt:
Sometimes, in the middle of the night, or the calm after a big storm, when the world seems new and fresh, when one can feel the rightness of the world falling into place, I forget. This is my favorite time; this is the point between old and new and the fresh and used. It is that point when I can pretend that I too am fresh and new. I can stand in the rain and shower off the old me, shedding it like the skin of a snake; with it goes the terrors and pain and I am left fresh. For a time. Then, I look down and see the scars, feel the terror and smell the fear. Yes, fear has a smell, a very distinct, very real smell. I am sure it is a different smell for everyone; for me it is lemons, coppery lemons. The fear I smell the most though is one that brings most peace.  And the sounds, oh the sounds that come screaming back into my head. They don’t leave. They never leave. They come screaming back, fast and furious, like a Japanese bullet train. Always on course, always on time. They crush me with the weight of the fear they bring with them. I have to escape. I need release; it is why I run in these early hours, in the rain and storms that other people stay out of.
I dress in my running gear and open myself up to the cathartic release I get from lacing up my shoes and I step out the door. I know I can’t out run my past.  I know I cannot escape the fears and pain, or erase the scars, but I can forget for a time. I can find that release. With each pounding footstep I feel calmer. I feel the terrors of my dreams fade and I can see the new day rising. What was done was done, I cannot change that. I am a new person now. New face, new name, new life. The run clears my mind and as I reach the end, the clearing of Aspens, with leaves now turning, looking golden and on fire in the early morning sun; I feel renewed. I love these mountains and their glorious, ever-changing beauty. The trees can be at once skeletal remains and yet grow, not giving in to nature, to become the beautiful fireballs before me, an amazing creation I am currently standing in awe of. Proof that life goes on; it continues. The world turns, the sun rises and sets and no one will remember what once was. Out of breath and energy, I lay down in the meadow and watch the sun continue its rise, preparing myself for another day. A day spent hiding myself yet being the most free I have ever been at the same time. Today, I start again...

Excerpt

“Do you still want to travel like how you used to?”
She shrugged her shoulders. “Maybe one day.” And in an even lower voice, “When it’s the right time I’ll see the world.” Such as when Jewel had grown up. Jewel would be starting school in a year. Even if Beth could travel, even if she used the money that paid for her apartment to instead ventured out and traveled a little, it would be selfish to move. The best thing for a kid was a stable non-changing environment. Beth was stuck where she lived and worked now for the next eighteen years.
“Anything you put your mind to I believe you’ll do, I have no doubt.” That truly meant something coming from an Olympian. Yet, in the room alone, away from the security that was outside, Sterling for once out of his disguise felt like a normal person, even a nice person at that. And as Beth and him looked at each other, she couldn’t help but see and even feel in the air the sensation of being around someone that she’d had the most intimate and intense physical experience with in her entire life. Their eyes stayed on each other and something within her chest stirred, the energy all around them so different now.
“What would you want to do, or where would you like to go, once you’ve retired from the Olympics?” Beth found herself asking in a light, nervous voice. This was something she needed to ask in order to get a feel for exactly how his future plans would mesh with a child, however, right now the question came out fast like quickening heartbeat, almost like she was flirting with him. And she wasn’t, right? She wouldn’t be that stupid.
“What would I want ‘to do?’” His eyes went down to her lips and then back up to her eyes. “I guess just experience the freedom of a calmer, more private life,” he told her, “where I can do what I want and not worry about whose watching or might be recording.”
Beth nodded as the space between them seemed less and less, and then Sterling said, “No one is watching now …” Slowly and cautiously, he moved closer in a way that was asking for both permission and demanding consent, and Beth found that she didn’t want him to stop. She didn’t move as he took advantage of this time they shouldn’t have had and leaned his head down more and more until his lips were almost touching hers. “I’ve been wanting to do this since the moment I realized it was you in that work office,” he said in a low, heavy, intense voice.
Beth’s entire body gushed and that energy in her chest felt like it wanted and needed to explode. As if lost in a dream, she leaned her head up and Sterling Johnson came down, closing the space between them then. His lips rubbed hers in a gentle swoop, sending fireworks down her spine. They still felt good, just like when they had kissed years ago, her own lips caressing his and proving to herself she could still kiss after all this time. Oh yeah, she could. She felt dazzled and taken over as he opened his arms, pulling her in as her own hands went up, touching the smooth shirt over his chest that was too thin as she felt him and they really kissed. Then kissed some more, her body purring in a way that shocked her as she’d forgotten what it was like to be pressed up against someone strong...
