King (King #1) by T.M. Frazier
Doe wakes up in a hospital with no memory of who she is or where she came from. She ends up in a group home and then on the streets homeless, hungry and desperate for months. Her friend convinces her they need protection and what better place to find it than at a party where there will be big bad bikers galore. What Doe finds is much more than what she bargained for.
King is a fearsome force to be reckoned with, a career criminal from a young age, he’s been released from prison and all he needs is a few drinks and maybe a willing woman to get him back into living life. Unfortunately, what he gets is a whole lot of trouble instead in the form of an innocent looking girl he can’t stop thinking about from the moment she walks in on him having sex with some skank. Doe is not what King expects he starts hating her, but then realizes quickly he can’t help but love her.
My Review:
This is the first book by T.M. Frazier that I have read and I absolutely loved it. I loved how she developed the characters of both King and Doe their connection was strong not just on a sexual level but a deeper level. The background characters of Preppy and Bear are fantastic, I loved the relationship between both of them as they relate to King and Doe.
King is not your ordinary romance novel hero. He is not romantic. He is not sweet. He’s mean. He’s scary. He’s someone to fear. Yet somehow, Doe manages to worm her way into his heart. Even though many of the things King does are questionable including murder and threatening to commit murder I still found myself loving him. Deep down the author made me believe that he was good at heart. He comes off as a good man who does bad things because he doesn’t know any other way to live. A product of a poor and loveless upbringing, until he meets Grace, who was a mother to him in every way his biological mother was not.
I like how the author didn’t go right into Doe and King having sex. There was a nice build up. Technically, she was a prisoner for a little while, but he lets her go and brings her back, then lets her go and brings her back. There is quite a bit of back and forth with him. However, I think it is because he wants love he wants compassion and understand he just doesn’t know how to handle it.
Doe was an amazing female character for me, she was tough, and I adored her. Life seemed to be kicking her ass at every turn, but she managed to pick herself up from the mud and never give up. My heart really went out to Doe and her predicament, she has no idea who she is and seems to find herself in trouble constantly.
I think the best line in this book came from King it’s a great
line—
“I've found myself again in the haunted eyes of a girl who was just as lost as I was. Or, maybe we didn't find each other at all. Maybe, we just decided to be lost together.”
This book is about two lost souls who come together through bad experiences in life, but in the end, what they give each other is hope for a better future. Unfortunately, circumstances and other people around them will prevent this couple from being able to have a forever kind of love. There are lots of surprises and twists and turns in this book. The cliffhanger was a jaw dropping one and I loved it! Can’t wait for Tyrant, August where are you?
Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Warning: This book contains graphic violence, consensual and nonconsensual sex, drug use, abuse, and other taboo subjects and adult subject matter. Although originally slated to be a standalone, KING is now a two part series.
*If dark romance, is not your cup of tea do not read this book for those of you who enjoy a grittier romance this is definitely a book I recommend
