Blog Tour: Bad Uncle (The Family Portrait Series by Gillian Felix

Haze switched his thoughts to Adriana. Every fiber of his being was in love with her and he was tired of hiding it. He and Carys had talked about it on their way to New York, and she made a valid point of saying that he and Adriana were both consenting adults and her parents couldn’t stop them from seeing each other. She encouraged him to go to Adriana’s parents, and if Adriana truly loved him, she would forgive him. Haze was hell-bent on professing his love for Adriana to her parents. He’d planned his speech and was ready. He was ready to apologize for sneaking around behind their backs and was willing to take whatever consequences they dished out. He was willing to do whatever it took to finally be with Adriana in the open.
He walked briskly through LAX. His mission, while he still had the courage, was to head to Banovic Manor. He texted his roommate, Chellon, to pick him up at the airport. Haze could hardly wait to get to the outside a few yards in front of him. With his eyes set firmly on his finish line, he dodged people coming at him from all directions; then just outside of Starbucks, L’Wren DaCosta bumped into him, spilling some of her ice-cold drink down his pant leg. As the liquid penetrated his pants and touched his skin, it slammed him into the present.
“I am so sorry, I wasn’t paying attention,” she apologized.
“It’s okay, neither was I.” He dusted the liquid from his pants.
“I’m so sorry, let me” She tried to wipe it off.
“Don’t worry about it. It’s okay. Lemme buy you another one.” Haze looked at her for the first time and she looked familiar, but he couldn’t place her.
“No, no, no, it’s fine. I am so clumsy!”
“You’re Kevin’s girlfriend.”
“I knew you looked familiar. Have we met?” L’Wren asked.
“Haze. I work for the Banovics, part time, but I’ve seen you at Bacchanal Jake’s.”
“That’s right!”
Haze nodded.
“L’Wren. Nice to meet you,” she introduced herself.
“Yeah, you too. You coming or going?”
“Just coming back from New York City. I presented one of my designs at Fashion Week.”
“No way! I was just coming back from there. I had a gig at that event.”
“Do you want a ride? My roommate should be here any minute now.”
“Kevin’s picking me up.” She beamed; it was obvious to Haze that she was very much in love with Kevin by the way she lit up when she mentioned his name.
L’Wren and Haze walked and talked about the shows. Once outside, the conversation flowed easily. They were so engrossed in conversation that they didn’t notice a black SUV pull up a few feet away. Two men got out and walked towards them.
“L’Wren?” one of the men asked.
“Kevin sent us to pick you up.”
One of the men relieved her of her bags. Haze had an uneasy feeling as he watched the man who spoke lead her away by her elbow.
“Bye, Haze.” She smiled. “Nice to meet you.”
Haze faked a smile, but his gut told him that something was not right. He saw them open the backseat door for her and he started walking towards them. One of the men noticed and quickly got in with L’Wren and they hastily drove off. He memorized the license plate as he dialed Kevin. At the same time Chellon pulled up and Haze spotted Kevin’s vehicle in traffic several cars behind.
Haze dropped his bag and ran towards Kevin’s vehicle.
“Hey, man!” Chellon called as he got out of his vehicle.
Kevin spotted Haze and lowered the window on the passenger side. “What’s going on, Haze?”
“Two guys just grabbed your girl, I think.”
“You shitting me, right?” Kevin looked at him in disbelief.
Chellon caught up to them.
“Kevin, I’m dead serious.” Haze told them everything that happened and gave him the license plate of the vehicle, and Kevin sped off, honking his way through traffic.
“We should call the cops. I’ve got the license plate, they could help.” Haze looked for both vehicles, but they had already disappeared.
“No, man, Kevin’s got this,” Chellon replied. Just then an airport security guard started to hassle them about leaving their vehicle unattended.

STT - Teaser 1

Lifting her sax, she wetted the reed and tested a wandering set of notes. With one hip on the railing, she let her internal playlist scroll and found herself playing “As Time Goes By.” Like a soft rain, the notes spilled over her deck and joined with the evening. A slow song, but not sad. It reminded her that the fundamentals of life, living and loving and dying, held the same from generation to generation.
That life could change for the better.
She was changing, as was her world. Or maybe she should call it growing, rather than changing.
As the tune went into the chorus, she heard Ben say something to Bronx in the kitchen. The dog whined an answer, and Ben’s big laugh rumbled out.
He was quite a guy. He’d been so careful with her this afternoon. Not pushing, but not stopping before he’d made his point.
Sometimes his internal strength was a bit disconcerting. All her slaves had wanted her in charge, wanted her to take control of everything. But Ben didn’t need her guidance.
At the same time, he wouldn’t fall apart if she showed any weakness, and because of that, she could relax around him.
But his obstinate need to be tough—to hide any weakness—was a problem. She should have noticed he was having flashbacks. But now she knew, and she could lead him to talk about his past. She’d pamper him up, keep him close, and ensure he got his sleep. He said he slept better at her house. With her.
He liked being with her. The realization wasamazing. Overwhelming.
She felt the same and more. He’d filled her life. Warmed it.
With a slow flourish, she ended the song and started another. One that had been growing in her heart over the past week, with the knowledge, the worry, the awe.“When I Fall in Love.” The music flowed, the ache of her soul merging with the notes.
She’d wanted to run. To push him away. And she hadn’t.
Ben, I love you.
The knowledge was terrifying and wonderful. For a little while yet, she’d savor the gift, and then she’d share.
Light washed out over the deck, and he stood there, filling the doorway as completely as he did her heart. “I was listening to you play.”
His golden-brown eyes held hers as he slowly smiled. “Mistress, may this submissive haul you off to bed?”

ABOUT SERVICING THE TARGET: A Masters of the Shadowland Novel:

A discharged Army Ranger, Ben considers his job as a BDSM club security guard to be an excellent hobby. He’s never been tempted to join in. But everything changes when the notorious Mistress Anne inadvertently reveals the caring heart concealed beneath her Domme armor.

Now, he’s set his sights on the beautiful Shadowlands Mistress. Maybe he’d considered himself vanilla, but she can put her stiletto on his chest any day, any time. He’ll trust her delicate hands to hold his heart. And if she wants to whip his ass on the way to an outstanding climax, he’s just fine with that too.

Sure, he knows she likes “pretty boy” slaves. And he’s older. Craggy and rough. And six-five. Minor hindrances. The mission is a go.

STT Teaser 2

Ben Haugen works security for the BDSM club the Shadowlands. He sees many strange things on the job none of which has tempted him into the lifestyle. But when he notices the wicked Mistress Anne for the first time, as more than just a Domme, when he sees the caring heart underneath all the tough exterior, he is more than tempted to give this submissive lifestyle a shot. Ben has made up his mind and targeted Anne for himself even though he has only known vanilla— the alluring mistress has him wanting so much more.

Mistress Anne has always been known for her tough exterior and strict Domme/slave protocol. She takes slaves for short periods, she cares for them gives them what they need in turn, they give her the control she craves. When they get too clingy, she cuts the pretty boys loose. Lately Anne has been feeling different, maybe she doesn’t want the same kind of Domme/slave relationship she has had in the past. Just when she feels adrift in life the guard dog of the Shadowlands, Ben catches her eye. He is the complete opposite of her usual pretty boy slaves with his bulging muscles and scared body. She decides to give a D/s relationship with the big, brawny ex-Army Ranger a shot. As long as she can hold on to her heart playing with him should be fun.

This is the tenth book in the series and I realized immediately how much I missed the Shadowland crew. I never thought Anne and Ben would turn out to be my all-time favorite BDSM couple. This was a fantastic read from beginning to end. I simply could not put it down.

Anne is the ultimate Domme the mistress everyone at the Shadowlands fears. She is notorious for taking down men twice her size in her job as a bounty hunter and having pretty boy slave’s bow at her feet. Yet it seems Anne might be changing completely against her will of course. When Ben the security guard notices there may be a heart beating under the armor she wears he feels inexplicably drawn to her. He wants her to beat his ass and take him to climax. Something Ben never would have guessed he would thoroughly enjoy being—submissive.

Anne relishes introducing Ben to the lifestyle and when they start to play, they develop a strong bond. The sex scenes between these two were over the top sexy, steamy, hot, and just plain erotic. My eyes were glued to every scene, whether in one of the Shadowlands playrooms or in their apartments the chemistry of these two characters was off the charts. Though, their sex life is great and Ben becomes to realize he craves submission in the bedroom, he isn’t, so sure he wants a full time slave relationship with Anne. Afraid to lose Anne thinking she wants a full time slave, he decides to try it, for her. It doesn’t take long for Ben to realize the 24/7 slave aspect of the lifestyle is definitely not for him. In an attempt to keep Annie he tries when his heart isn’t in it. Anne and Ben tried so hard to be what the other wanted and needed that they forgot to communicate. A very important component in any relationship, especially a D/s one, in the end all they had to do was talk and compromise.

These characters were so well written I felt every emotion. Anne was a strong female character, but she had a soft side that would show through when she interacted with her female friends and with Ben. I loved that side of her, but as did Ben, I loved her Domme side too. Ben and Anne are perfect for each other and they complement each other’s personality so well making for a great story. I loved how much Ben wanted Anne and how he never gave up trying to get her. He stumbles at the end for a minute, but that was because he loved her so much. Anne needed someone who would always be by her side and that was definitely Ben.

Of course, all our other Masters and subbies are back, Master Z dishing out advice and giving orders. Jessica, Sally, Kim, Andrea, and Uzuri causing trouble. Our favorite, Masters are back as well, wreaking havoc, Cullen, Raoul, Marcus and Nolan.

Cherise Sinclair also does an excellent job of depicting the traumas of domestic violence. Domestic violence against woman plays a huge part in this installment as it has in the other books as well. Uzuri definitely has secrets and issues regarding her violent past that she needs to deal with I hope we get her story as well I would love to see her find her HEA.

Anne’s family issues are also a big part of this story her relationship with her father is shaky. He has never given her credit for her accomplishments which has made her feel any and inadequate in her father’s eyes. I really liked her brother Travis too would be nice to get his story, not sure if he has a kink though I bet he does.

This was truly a great addition to the Shadowland series and it is definitely my favorite. There are some surprise for the couples in the book, some danger and some really sweet moments. As always I recommend the entire series if you enjoy the BDSM genre Cherise Sinclair is the ultimate Mistress of BDSM storytelling.

Chapter Three

I sit up when I hear bare feet slapping against the floor. My head is throbbing and my mouth feels like it’s stuffed with cotton. I sit up, swing my legs around, and lean for-ward holding my head. “What’s going on?”

A flash of last night comes into focus. Drinking at Ocean’s knowing damn well I should have went to Fierce. At least I knew if I went there I’d get home but since I didn’t I can’t recall how I got here. I blink my eyes a few times, I don’t have hardwood floors in my living room. I lift my head a little more and see the fireplace directly in front of me with a picture of Jaylinn and Cooper staring at me, the picture from their wedding that takes me back to a better time in my marriage. How the hell did I get here? How the hell did we get here?

Cooper shakes his head at me. “Jaylinn’s in labor. We’re on our way to the hospital.”

I turn my head in my brother’s direction a little too fast as the throbbing pain bounces inside my head. “Good luck.”

“Make yourself useful and call everyone to meet us at the hospital, will ya?” Cooper yells a little louder than necessary. Fucker.

I cover my ears to stop the ringing. “Yeah, alright.”

After they leave I stand up from the couch and make my way into the kitchen to get something to drink, on the search for hydration and massive amounts of pain reliever. Chloe is going to fucking kill me when I get home. Maybe I won’t go home for a while; let her cool off. Yeah, I can hopefully distract her with the news of Jaylinn being in la-bor. Yeah, that’s what I’ll do. I’ll act like I came here because of that.

I wander back into the living room in search of my phone that’s miraculously ended up on the floor in plain sight. I dial Chloe. As it rings once my stomach bottoms out. We’ve been trying so hard for a baby lately and nothing has happened. She’s been tracking every little thing on that app she has on her phone, she takes her temperature every morning at the exact same time, pees on those sticks twice a day that tells her if she’s ovulating and still nothing. Nothing for the last eleven months.

Chloe’s voicemail picks up and I hang up not bothering to leave a message. I’m not surprised really that she didn’t answer. I tap the phone a few times and dial my mom.

“Hey, sweetheart, everything okay?” Mom says while yawning.

I clear my throat. “Yeah, just wanted to let you know that Jaylinn is in labor. Cooper just took her to the hospital.”

“Oh, it’s about time.” She yawns again. “I’ll wake Dad and head over.”

“Okay. Bye, Mom.”

She’s quiet for a second before she speaks again. “Jackson, is everything okay?”

I let out a long sigh. “I don’t know, Mom.”

I can picture her nodding her head. “You know you can always come and talk to me, right? I’m always here for you no matter what.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

“Anytime, you know where to find me.”

I hang up the phone and dial MacKenzie next. I know if I don’t call her right away and someone else tells her she’ll throw a fit.

She finally answers on the fourth ring. “Jackson?”

“Hey, just wanted to let know that Jaylinn is in labor.”

I chuckle. “I’m hanging up to go call Mason.”

“Thanks for calling me.”

“You’re welcome.”

I dial Mason next. When he picks up all I hear in the background is complete chaos. Kids laughing and crying, Hailey yelling and the T.V. blasting. “Hello?”

“Hey, what’s up, bro?”

“Just wanted to let you know that Cooper is on the way to the hospital with Jaylinn.”

“Lex, put that down.” I swear that little girl is mini-Mason in the making. She gets into everything and anything. “Lex! That’s gross, stop.”

Mase, I’ll let you go.”

“Shit, man, sorry. Lex is playing with the mop that’s soaked with Caleb’s spilled milk and she’s trying to put it in her mouth.”

I shudder, then laugh. “That’s disgusting.”

“Ugh, tell me about it.”

“She’s your mini me.”

Mason sighs. “I know and I wouldn’t want it any other way. At least I know she’ll give the boys a run for their money,” he chuckles. “She’s going to scare them all away and make my life a little easier.”

“Ha, that’s what you think.”

“You know I’m going to need you to watch out for her when I’m gone when the time comes.”

“I got you.” I yawn and relax back against the couch. “Well, I’m going to let you go. I’ve got to run home to take a shower so I can go up to the hospital.”

“Where are you? It’s not even eight in the morning.”

“I crashed at Cooper’s.”

I sigh. “Yeah, I just needed a break.”

Mason doesn’t say anything for a second and I know he’s wandering if he should push for information but he won’t. Mason’s not that kind of guy. He’ll wait until I’m ready. “Alright, I’ll probably see you up there.” He finally says.

I put the phone down beside me and close my eyes for just a second because the throbbing in my head is getting worse with every passing second.

What the hell is that noise? Jesus, make it stop!

I pry my eyes open, the sun coming in from the windows is shining right in my face. “Shit.” Leaning forward I rub my eyes with the palms of my hands. I pick up my cell phone still sitting beside me. Fuck, it’s two-thirty and I have seven missed calls and five texts. I slide my finger across the screen, my mom, dad, Kenz, my dad and mom both called another time and two calls from Chloe. All the texts are from Cooper asking if I’m still alive and where the hell am I.

Running a hand through my hair I get my ass up off the couch, grab my keys, cell phone, and wallet and make my way to my truck. I open the front door of their house and shield my eyes with my hand from the sun. After locking the door, I take the two steps to the walkway and stop in front of the driveway.

“What the fuck?” I close my eyes and open them. My truck isn’t here.

Where the hell is it?

How did I get here last night?

I shake my head and take a seat on Cooper’s front steps. I’m in a world of shit.

I dig my cell phone out of my pocket and call Mason. Hopefully he’ll answer and can take me to find my car. After a few rings I get his voicemail. “Fuck.”

I try Hunter, MacKenzie, Cooper, and even mom and dad but no one answers their damn phones! What the hell is the point of having a cell phone if no one wants to pick it up?

I guess the only other person left to call is Chloe. I could call one of the guys from work but I’d rather not mix my personal life with business.

The phone rings three times before she answers. “What, Jackson?”

Yeah, she’s really fucking pissed.

“UmCan you come pick me up from Cooper’s?”

It’s quiet for a few very long seconds and the entire time I’m holding my breath.

“Where’s your truck?”

I scratch the top of my head. “I don’t know.”

She huffs and then I hear her tell Alex to put his shoes on. “I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

“Thank---” before I even finish she’s hung up on me. At least I know that she’s bringing Alex and she won’t fight with me in front of him.

Chloe pulls up about fifteen minutes later. I stand up from the steps and walk over to the passenger side of the car. I drive ninety percent of the time but I feel like I’m still drunk from the night before.

“Hey,” I turn around towards the back seat to say hi to Alex but he’s not there. “Where’s Alex?”

You’re mom has him.”

I nod and lean the seat back a little.

“Where am I going to get your truck?” She asks as she backs out of the driveway.

“Just go home first. I need a shower and more pain reliever.”

No sooner do we get on the road than the questions start coming. I don’t want to fight with Chloe, I really don’t. I love her with everything I am, she’s the mother of my son and she’s my best friend but somewhere along the way shit has gotten fucked up be-tween us.

“Where did you go last night?”

She nods her head once and I know what she’s thinking. How come I didn’t go to Fierce? But I don’t answer her because, truthfully, I don’t know. I guess it’s because I just wanted to go somewhere no one really knows who I am. I can be whoever I want to be there. No one to judge me and think ‘Shouldn’t you be home with your wife and kid?’.

“How did you get to Cooper’s?”

I don’t answer right away because I know this is going to kill her. “I’m not sure.”

She nods again. “So you basically blacked out?”

This time I nod because, fuck, I can’t remember shit last night. Only thing I do remem-ber is driving my ass to the club, sitting at the bar and ordering drinks as I watched Sports Center.

Chloe shakes her head in what I know is disgust. My temper flares and I want to scream and punch the hell out of something. She has every right to be disgusted with me but Goddamn it I’m allowed to fuck up every once in a while. I’ve done everything I should have done for her since we graduated high school.

As we turn onto the driveway she asks, “What the hell is going on with you, Jackson?” Her voice goes up an octave. “Did I do something wrong?”

And my temper hits its threshold. Why can’t she just shut the fuck up? “You want to know what is wrong?” I yell. “I’ve always felt like I need to love you, need to take care of you, need to take care of fucking everything. I never got to grow up! Never got to go to college, never got to do my own thing or do anything I wanted because I was al-ways fucking thinking and worrying about you.”

As soon as the words are out of my mouth I regret them. The look on Chloe's face shifts from anger, to shock, to hurt, and then to devastated. I just did that to her. I just broke her heart even more than it already was. Damn it!

I scrub my face with my hands. Chloe hasn’t said a word and, quite honestly, I don’t know if she will. Can I even take what I just said back?

I don't know but I know I have to try for us and for Alex. Maybe this is my problem. May-be I resent Chloe in some way. It’s wrong, I know it is, but fuck.

Out of the corner of my eye I see Chloe turn. She places her hand on the door knob and looks back at me over her shoulder. “I’m sorry I’ve ruined your life, Jackson.” The door opens, Chloe steps out and the door clicks shut behind.

I’ve just royally fucked things up.

This is where I

That's how on January 2015 I began writing and publishing my novellas. I love it and I hope you enjoy reading my stories almost as much as I enjoyed writing them! If you don't know where to start I'd suggest you pick up Unforeseen, Fortuitous and Alpha Queen, which are all free.
