Cover Reveal: Miles Away - The Carrion Series by Addison Kline

Title: Miles Away

Author: Addison Kline

Genre: Mystery/Suspense

The mafia couldn't kill him.

Prison couldn't break him.

Going home threatens to do both.

Miles Capadonno has made some mistakes. Once part of the Capadonno crime family, he took the fall for another member of the crime family who once tried to kill him. At age 17, they put a contract out on Miles' head for neglecting to complete a job. It was a matter of priority. Miles went to his dying mother's side instead of picking up stolen merchandise from the ship yard. When you're in with the Capadonno's, whether you're blood or sworn in, when they say jump you jump, when they say kill you kill. Ignoring an order is an offense of the highest degree. When they couldn't kill him, they let Miles take the fall for another Capadonno family member. Now 15 years later, Miles is being released. He is ready to put his past behind him. There's only one problem. There is still a contract on Miles' head. This time, Miles is man enough to collect on owed debts, and he will not back down from the family that stabbed him in the back.

Leticia "Letty" Alves is a saucy Latina and Miles' old high school girlfriend. She was only 16 when Miles was arrested, but she hasn't stopped wondering about the boy who charmed her all those years ago. Now working as a nurse for a home health agency, Letty's priorities are to take care of herself and her 18 month old son, Gabriel. But when Miles walks back into her life everything changes, and suddenly, the family that she had avoided all her life, is now breathing down her neck looking for Miles. Letty is no damsel in distress, though. She's a fighter, and she never backs down from a challenge.

Sparks fly when Miles and Letty reunite. Can they put their differences aside to become one again? Can Miles set down his pride and accept the help and love that Letty can provide? Will Letty get over her resentment over being left so long ago when Miles was arrested? Only readers know for sure.

Welcome to Carrion, New Jersey, where the Capadonno's call the shots. Miles was away for so long, but now the prodigal son has returned. One thing is for sure, the family business isn't ready for a bastard like him.

Excerpt:

“Where did you learn to dance?” she asked.

He couldn’t say that his very first manager had hired dance instructors to work with him to perfect his onstage moves and that, more recently, he’d hired a “male entertainer” to show him how to make his moves sexier. Instead, he opted for something he could tell her.

“My grandparents owned an Arthur Murray dance studio. I spent my summers there. When I was thirteen, I thought it would be the happening place to pick up girls, so I paid attention. I learned a lot.”

“I’ll bet you were smooth, even back then.”

“I thought I was.” He smiled at her. “I see the pictures now and think ‘dork in braces.’”

She laughed. “I can’t imagine it.”

“True story.”

Because he wasn’t digging even the small bit of distance between them, Jesse flattened his palm to her back, sliding down to the sway in her spine, bringing her petite frame and sweet curves even closer. He didn’t usually have any trouble controlling his cock. Now it had a mind of its own, and he ached to slide all of her against every inch of him too badly to care if she felt that.

When he arched into her, she gasped, then flattened herself against him. The friction as they swayed together blew his mind. She glanced up at him, and he curled a finger under her chin to bring her face beneath his. He really had to restrain himself from grabbing her ass. Public displays didn’t bother him but that sort of thing might bug her. And he wasn’t supposed to be drawing attention to himself.

“If you don’t want me to kiss you, say something now.”

“I… I can’t.”

Jesse eased back, trying not to let the surprisingly visceral disappointment consume him. “You can’t let me kiss you?”

“No, I can’t say anything.”

His entire body tensed. He wanted to throw her to the ground and get inside her in the next thirty seconds. Sure he liked sex. Loved it. But this compulsion to take off Bristol’s clothes and make her scream out his name seemed way beyond any normal urge.

He took her face in his hands. God, she was so small in his grip. Delicate. Lovely. Her stare clung to him, her green eyes so open and earnest. She wasn’t playing a game, wasn’t merely interested in him because of who he was. She seemed to like him.

Now was a really crappy time to decide that he seriously liked a girl. Jesse knew he should walk away. But Deke had advised him to make all the parts of his life meaningful. Bristol Reese might be the most meaningful thing he’d felt in years.

~Finn~

I lowered my palms. The barrier was in place. I slumped against the doorframe of the spare bedroom and rubbed my temples. I was still really high from absorbing her power into me. The last time I’d felt power as strong and as potent as hers had beenthat nightthe night I’d lost my mother.

I pinched the bridge of my nose to distract myself. Not going there.

I couldn’t. There was too much emotion there. Too much pain. I had to remain levelheaded and impassive at all times. I didn’t have the luxury of letting my emotions run wild or of becoming too stimulated by anything. Tonight had already shaken my levelheaded state as it was—I’d felt for the girl. Felt? What the hell was that all about?

I shook my head and turned to go.

“Finn?”

Shit. How the hell is she already awake? That power drain should’ve knocked her out for hours. It’d only been about ten minutes so far.

I took another step to the door.

“Don’t go,” her shaky, vulnerable voice of innocence called to me again. Begging me.

“You’ll be fine. Just sleep,” I said, my tone harsh.

“I’m cold.”

“I’ll turn up the heat.”

“Inside. Cold inside,” she said.

Argh! I needed to keep walking. I needed to just walk out and slam the door behind me. But my better judgment was fucked. Maybe it was the high that was still lingering.

I turned around to face her.

Big mistake.

Her stunning eyes were wide and afraid. Her hair looked hot as the fires of hell, all messed up from lying in bed. And her big, perky tits were teasing me in that painted on t-shirt she had on. It didn’t help that I couldn’t get the visual of that tiny skin-tight skirt I knew she was wearing beneath the covers out of my head. Where are these thoughts coming from? I was a master of control, yet, here I was, getting hard at the sight of her.

I approached the bed, trying not to make direct eye contact. That vulnerable look in her eyes was dangerous to my self-control. I reached out my hand and pressed it to her forehead. As cold as ice.

“It’ll pass,” I told her. A side-effect of the power drain and the fact that I’d pulled so hard just to knock her out as fast as possible. I hadn’t been gentle like I should’ve been. There hadn’t been time.

“Okay,” she said, dejectedly.

“Yeah.”

“How long will it take?”

“Just go to sleep. It’ll be gone by morning.”

I was about to step away when her hand suddenly grabbed my wrist. Holy shit. She was cold. I could feel her hand trembling.

“You’re really warm,” she said, in a blissful moan, trying to pull me to her.

I looked at her, finally, and her eyes burned into mine, willing me to help her; to make the cold disappear. Somehow, she seemed to just know, to know that I was the only one who could.

And how could I deny her that?

Son of a bitch!

Okay, I just needed to get a grip. It was business. Just business. I’d help her, but keep it clinical and nothing else. After all, I needed her to trust me. And, after her grandmother had warned her off me, I had my work cut out for me more than I should’ve. So, this would go a long way to fixing that shit.

I pried her fingers from my wrist and took a step back. Turning from her, but staying beside the bed, I commanded, “Take off your clothes.”

“What?” she gasped.

“It has to be skin-to-skin contact.”

“Ohokay.”

“Butuhleave yourunderwear on, yeah?”

She murmured something that I couldn’t make out. I knew she wasn’t really with it. She was still in shock and the power drain could have that effect, too. The other reason I knew she was out of it? When I’d walked into that occult store, the first thing I’d felt from her was her strength. Not magical strength. No, her inner strength. The girl was tough. And right now, that wasn’t the case.

“Finn?” she called, ripping me from my thoughts.

“Yeah?” I said over my shoulder.

“I’m done.”

“You under the covers?”

“Yeah.”

“All right.” I turned back to her and pulled off my black t-shirt. Her gasp startled me and my gaze snapped to hers. Her eyes were all over me; sparkling with awe. I couldn’t tell whether she was checking me out just cuz my chest was bare, or if it was the markings covering the length of both my arms and across my upper chest and back.

“Oh my God. They look like mine.”

“Yeah?” I responded, pretending like I didn’t know.

She just nodded and didn’t press it. Phew.

I looked away and toed off my shoes. It pissed me off that I was doing this without magic—the long assed way—but I didn’t wanna freak her out any more than she’d already been tonight, so I was keeping it normal and avoiding overt displays of magic. I pulled off my jeans until I was down to my boxers. As I approached the bed, I saw her eyes dart right there, checking out my dick.

I cleared my throat loudly and she looked away embarrassed. Thank fuck. Having her eyes on me like that wasdifficult.

I pulled the covers back and slid into the bed beside her. She didn’t move and it took me a second to realize why: she was waiting for me to instruct her; to lead her.

“Roll into me,” I told her as coolly as possible, just managing to keep the strain out of my voice.

She did as I told her. It struck me that there was no hesitation at all. Really weird considering we barely knew each other and the fact that the witch had spouted some bad shit about me, filling her head with fear towards me. But nowwhat...she was over it? Just like that?

She buried her face in my chest and I wrapped my arms around her, trying to ignore the feel of her tits pressing into me. I could feel the lace of her bra and, somehow, that was worse than having them nakedmore erotic, or something. Fuck me.

“You trust me now?” I asked. “Thought I was dangerous to you?”

“Iyeah.”

“Just like that?”

“No… just now. The longer you’re around me, the more the danger is gone.”

Wow. What the hell did that mean? I hadn’t spelled her. It was all her.

She lifted her head, but I shut my eyes before she could make contact. That shit would be way too intimate in a situation like this fucked up one. I was doing this for one reason…to take away the cold I’d caused from being too rough with the power drain.

I summoned my magic, turning the crackling blue energy on my palms into heat. I couldn’t actually give her my power. She didn’t know how to control it, which was why we were in this situation in the first place. But I could spell her body with warmth to get her through the night, until she recovered naturally from the drain in a few hours.

She made a sound between a moan and a purr. The sweetest fucking sound. This was a bad idea, cuz it felt too fucking good. There was no aggravation to my magic with her, cuz she wasn’t human. But it was also more than even that. I felt something I’d never felt before. Peace. And it freaked me the fuck out. I couldn’tlike this. I couldn’t feel anything. I was her Guard. She was a mission and nothing else. I needed to keep myself in check. It was just a spell. Clinical. I gritted my teeth and choked out, “Sleep.”

But she had other ideas. “Finn?” she whispered.

What is it now? “What?” I snapped.

She shuddered in my arms and I instantly hated myself for it.

“Sorry. What, River?” I asked, gently.

“Thank you.”

“You feel warm now?”

“Yeah. But not just that. Forcaring and forunderstanding me. You’re the first.”

Her words ripped right through me and a pang of guilt hit me square in the chest.

If she only knew the truth.

“You’re warm now,” I said, releasing her and scrambling off the bed as fast as I could. I needed to get away from her.

With my back to her, I hastily snapped my fingers and dressed by magic. Screw not doing any overt magic in front of her.

I didn’t chance looking back at her, as I passed through the barrier I’d put in place and rushed out the door, slamming it closed behind me.

Title: The End Game

 Release Date: September 8, 2015

Blurb

“Professional athletes are
pillars of their respective communities. They are heroes in the eyes of boys
and girls and are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that positively
represents their community.”
The public loves a good scandal. Seeing someone
fall from the pinnacle of success makes a great headline. No one knows that
better than I do. What started out as a promising career in college football,
spiraled into scandal and shame.
But being a hero is easier said then done.
Especially when there are those who expected to see the great Brody Madden
fail. I craved nothing except being the best—willing to do anything to prove
them wrong. But I went too far, and I tried too hard, and it broke me.
“At the time of going to print,
Jordan Elliott was unavailable for comment.”
I met Brody Madden in my senior year of college. An
Australian native on an international scholarship, I was the female soccer
sensation with stars in her eyes and no room for a hotshot wide receiver with a
chip on his shoulder.
But a heart bursting with ambition and a driving
fire to succeed isn’t made of stone. I became his strength, his obsession, and
the greatest love of his life. Only I wasn’t there when he needed me most.
This is a story about love and a game that takes
everything. Where the path to glory is paved with sacrifice. Where pressure
makes you, or breaks you, and triumph is born in the ashes of failure. Where
two people’s end game will change everything.

Shutting the door, I walk up the slight incline behind Brody. He sits down at the top of the crest and pats the grassy spot beside him.

“You didn’t mention this part when you explained our date.”

“I can’t give away all my secrets now, can I?”

The grass is a thick blanket on the ground and when I stretch out flat, the rich, earthy scent of soil sweeps over me. My eyes lift to the sky and that’s when I get it. It’s perfectly clear and millions of stars are scattered diamonds twinkling above us—bright and magical.

“Besides,” Brody adds as he lies down beside me and sweeps out his arm, encompassing all of it. “How do you explain that?”

He’s right. You can’t. “It’s beautiful.”

“Is this what the stars are like for you back home?”

“No. Back home it’s different.”

“Different how?”

Homesickness swamps me. As beautiful as Texas is, it’s not Australia. Somehow the stars are always brighter where you belong. “Because there’s no place like home.”

“You’re wrong.”

I turn my head and stare at Brody. He’s not looking at me. His head is tilted toward the sky, eyes riveted on the beauty above him. My gaze follows the line of his profile. From the curl of his hair to the perfect line of his nose, down to the mouth I want kissing me right this very instant.

“Home’s not a place where you live. It’s a feeling.” His hand nudges my own. An invitation. I twine my fingers with his and he squeezes them lightly. “Whether it’s where you are, like the football field, or who you’re with.” Brody turns his head, looking at me when he says that. It’s comforting because it unites us somehow, like it’s slowly becoming us against the world. “You can be anywhere, Jordan. Home will follow you if you follow your heart.”

My breath hitches from the beautiful simplicity of his words. Before I can talk myself out of it, I roll over and straddle him. My knees hug his hips, and he stares up at me from my seated position. My pulse pounds a heavy beat in the silence. Thump, thump, thump. It’s so loud in my ears I’m sure he can hear it.

“Show me,” I breathe. A gleam lights his dark eyes, and he sucks his lower lip inside his mouth. He knows what I’m asking, but I spell it out anyway. “Show me one of those wicked things.”

In a move that steals the air from my lungs, he takes both my hands and pulls me down against the broad width of his chest. I’m rolled over and underneath him before I can blink. The squirm in my hips is instinctive, the ache between my thighs relentless.

“Careful what you ask for,” Brody says roughly, every exquisite inch of his body pressing down on mine.

“Why?”

His lips curve. “Because when I give it to you, it won’t be enough.”

My fingers trail down the side of his face, grazing the firm jaw, cupping his cheek in my palm. Foreboding swamps me. I’m falling hard into uncharted territory, and all I see is a broken mess at the end. How is this going to end well for either of us?

“You’re an arrogant man, Brody Madden,” I whisper.

He brings his face to mine, so close I see the brilliant gold in his eyes, like flecks of light in the dark. “And you, Jordan Elliott, will be the woman who brings me to my knees,” he whispers against my lips.

“Show me,” I beg on a shaky breath.

Brody’s lashes lower and he presses a kiss to the corner of my mouth. I tilt my chin upwards, inviting more. Rather than take my lips like I ache for him to do, he shifts sideways and begins nipping at my jaw. His breath is a rasp when he reaches my earlobe, taking it between his teeth. A sharp pinch from his bite forces a whimper from my throat.

“More?” he asks, drawing back to look at me.

“Is that even a real question?”

Brody chuckles as I slide my hand up and around his nape, dragging his mouth down to mine. He groans and kisses me gently, once, and then twice.

“Brody,” I whisper, and he kisses me again, forcing my mouth open hard like he can’t hold himself in check anymore. My hair is loose and he fists chunks of it in both hands while his tongue rubs against mine, hot and aggressive. It’s almost too much, and when I jerk away I’m left gasping.

Brody doesn’t pause. He ducks his head to my neck, his tongue tasting its way down. He finds my pulse point and sucks. It’s fierce and my back arches involuntarily. His mouth shifts further down, moving on before he leaves a mark.

Sitting up, he takes the neckline of my dress in both hands. Five dainty buttons hold it together. A single wrench will rip the flimsy fabric in two. He pauses and looks at me, inhaling raggedly. “Jordan I don’t want to ruin it.”

My brow furrows. I glance to the hands poised on my dress. They’re tense, veins straining under his skin. My head is lost in a fog when my gaze returns to his face. “Ruin my dress?”

Brody groans, a deep sound of regret and frustration. “Us.”

“You don’t want to ruin us?”

He draws his hands away from the neckline of my dress. “No.”

“How would you do that?”

“I don’t know. I just get this feeling I’m going to.” He shifts away, moving off me and rolling to his back. I turn my head. Brody’s gaze is back on the stars. I watch his throat work as he swallows, the pulse in his neck pounding visibly. “All I’ve ever wanted is to be the best. Whatever it takes. I’ll do anything. That’s how I’ll ruin us, Jordan. How can something so sweet survive a sentiment so dark?”

I roll to my side, holding my head in my hand. Cupping his face with the other, I nudge gently until he’s looking at me. “I won’t let you.”

Brody’s voice is urgent, his eyes fierce. “Promise me.”

I can’t shake the apprehension. It’s set in my bones and when I speak it feels like a lie. “I promise.”
