Olivia Case’s life has just taken a negative turn. She recently found out she has cancer and she needs to start treatment right away. Figures this new development in her life would coincide with meeting the gorgeous Garrett Samuelson hockey player extraordinary with a man whore reputation . Normally he’s the kind of guy Olivia would steer clear of not being one for casual sex. But in her current circumstances a scorching one night stand might be just what the doctor ordered. Little does she know Garrett has decided he wants to see her again and again making it hard for her not to fall for him. Can she tell him the truth? Will she be able to take it if he leaves knowing she might not make it?
This is the second book in the Cold Fury Hockey series by Sawyer Bennett, ” Alex” is the first book. You do not have to read the first book to get into Garrett’s story, though I have purchased Alex dying to know how he and Sutton got together. Garrett and Olivia’s story really surprised me, in the beginning the first few chapters hit me with a bang. Garrett starts off as a typical hot athlete, off the charts charming and jumping from bed to bed. He immediately meets Olivia and sparks fly. Garrett is feeling emotions for a woman he never thought he would feel for anyone. I liked reading Garrett’s POVs as he begins to realize his feelings for Olivia. When he starts to help her through her issues my heart melted. Having recently dealt with the death of my sister to cancer, it was tough to read about Olivia’s treatments at times, though a different cancer than my sister had the emotions surrounding the disease are the same. I felt the writer did an excellent job depicting the difficulties of dealing with chemotherapy, tests and doctors appointments. As well has how the disease affects the loved ones of the person who is sick.
The background characters of Olivia’s and Garrett’s friends were a heartwarming and fun addition to the story. Olivia’s mother and bestie were a hoot. Then when tragedy strikes for one of their own the Cold Fury guys rally around him. This book had me really battling a lot of emotions, I laughed, I cried, I ugly cried and I smiled. A really great romance, with hot athletes, steamy sex scenes and heart wrenching drama. I am very much looking forward to going back to read Alex as welling as getting my hands on Zack the third book in the series.
