Abby Masters realized it was time for her to move on, leave her small town life where she was suffocating under her mother’s scrutiny and her father’s abandonment. She picks up and leaves her past behind to go on a journey of self-discovery. Abby decides to travel around the world, looking to clear her mind of past wrongs and hurts. Some she inflicted on others and some that were inflicted on her. She hopes to find a “New Abby” and a new life. She never imaged she would meet someone like Clive on the plane heading to Scotland, the first stop on her adventure. Though she is determined to find herself and not get involved with a man she finds Clive’s Scottish charms hard to resist.
My Review:
This is book three in the Southern Roots series by Julie Morgan and my first read from this author. In the beginning of the book about twenty percent in I was having a little bit of a hard time connecting with Abby because I didn’t read the other books in the series and could not understand her history. I worried this would affect my opinion of her story. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised as I kept reading I began to care about Abby and what happened to her in her life. I realized maybe it was better that I didn’t have a preconceived notion of Abby from the other books. I probably would have hated her for sleeping with her best friend’s boyfriend. Not having that in my head as I read her story I was able to care about why Abby did the bad things she did, what drove her to hurting others. This made for a really great emotional read. I felt for Abby and her childhood experiences, a drunk mother an absentee father. She meets a man who doesn’t know her past and when he finds out about her history he doesn’t care. He sees her, truly sees who she is, not what she allows people to see. They snap and sizzle with chemistry from their first meeting. I thought the sex scenes were very steamy, I liked the little bit of D/s the author threw in, not much, but enough to make the sex scenes hot, and also to get through how much it meant for Abby the one always in control to give control over to a man. Clive was a great alpha male character when he shows up when Abby needs her the most tears welled in my eyes. I am not usually one for the red headed men, but I was loving his Scottish ways and his traditional kilt wearing.
I love a good epilogue and this book had a great one. It’s always a good sign to me when I want to go back in a series to read how the other characters got together. You don’t have to read the previous books to get into Abby’s story. I look forward to trying out more of Julie Morgan’s books.
Received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review
