Aspiring concert violist Emmaline Aurora Grace Andrews is torn between her love of family and her love of music. A year ago, she deferred entering a prestigious graduate program to help her parents recover from a devastating accident. Now the deferment is expiring, but her parents still need her. Worse, every time she plays her audition piece, she mangles it. Is it too late to be the musician she'd always dreamed of? Should she even try?

Determined to get clarity, Emmaline accepts a friend's offer for a whirlwind European vacation. First Stop: a real live fantasy kingdom—the perfect place to sort wishes from reality.

Prince Kristos Andris was a respected captain in his nation’s military… Was. In the wake of the tragic death of his elder brother, he's managed to avoid his duties as the new Crown Prince of Garronia for months. But now he must accept his responsibilities and leave his troops behind. Outraged at the restrictions of his new royal position, he'll do anything for one last adventure. So when opportunity suddenly lands in his arms in the form of a dreamy-eyed American girl, he embraces it (and her) for all he's worth. What's the harm in a quick fling, after all? It won’t change what he knows he must do…

Only this is Garronia in the summertime, where passion has a way of ruining even the most sensible of plans.

Author Interview

An interview with Jennifer Chance to celebrate COURTED!

Jennifer, hello… and what a great first name you have!  Thanks for interviewing me today. I look forward to sharing a little bit more about my process with your readers!

1. When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Very early in life, I loved to read and writing came naturally to me after that. My first “novel” was a Choose Your Own Adventure game, written in computer code for the Commodore Vic-20 and then Commodore 64. This makes me approximately a million years old, lol. But I was maybe 12-13 at that point? After that, I always knew words would be my calling.

2. What is your favorite book?

This changes with the season, but I do have certain standbys that I can read again and again. In romance, I would say anything by Julia Quinn, as well as Welcome to Temptation, by Jennifer Crusie. But there are so many amazing books out there, it’s hard to pick!

3. How much of your own life do you put into your stories if any?

Well, I did happen to fallen in love with a prince on my last trip to Europe… okay, not really. I think I put a little of myself into each story – maybe a turn of phrase or an attitude, or a particular quirk. Emmaline, for instance, is a list maker and ever so slightly neurotic. I, um, didn’t have to do research to know what that is like.

4. What is your dream location to live and which fantasy book boyfriend would you take with you?

Dream location: a lovely, lush beach that’s not too crowded, but not too remote. I do have a thing for running water and electricity! Fantasy book boyfriend… hmm. As another Jennifer (Jenn Stark) I write a series of Urban Fantasy novels. My character Armaeus would be a good guy to have along on a trip!

5. Who are the authors that have inspired you?

This list is just about endless, but the one who comes to mind immediately is Lori Foster. She’s generous, good-hearted, smart, savvy, no-nonsense and she works very, very hard to write amazing books to keep her readers delighted. She’s an amazing mother, wife, friend and person, too. So she is definitely an inspiration!

6. What has been the best part of your writing journey?

I think the best part of the journey is opening myself up to always learning something new. Writing isn’t easy, but it is a fascinating process. There are highs and lows, but as the saying goes: it’s a great life if you don’t weaken. 

7. Do you know how your stories will end or does it come to you as you go?

I have an understanding of how the books will end and what the key turning points are, but I tend to write a bit more pantsy now than I have in past years. Every once in awhile, a book will surprise me and take me in a new direction that actually is far better than anything I’d originally imagined.

8. From your own list of characters do you have a favorite?

Queen Catherine in COURTED! The Queen Mother is a lovely woman, but she’s also very smart and ever so slightly manipulative, especially when it comes to helping along true love. I adore her. 

9. What other books do you have in the works? Can you give us a short description?

Of course! Book 2 in the Gowns & Crowns series is coming out in January, CAPTURED. This is Lauren’s story – she’s a headstrong socialite whose recent notoriety (in COURTED) draws the attention of a past, rather nasty boyfriend, a boyfriend who is determined to get her back. Against Lauren’s wishes the insufferably arrogant bodyguard Dimitri Korba is assigned as her protector, and when they’re not at each other’s throats, they’re… at each other’s throats in a totally different way . I’m looking forward to their adventure!

Thanks so much, again, for interviewing me, Jennifer! If you have the opportunity to read COURTED, I hope you enjoy it!
