About LOVE IN THE LIGHT (Hearts in Darkness Duet #2):

Two hearts in the darkness…

Makenna James and Caden Grayson have been inseparable since the day they were trapped in a pitch-black elevator and found acceptance and love in the arms of a stranger. Makenna hopes that night put them on the path to forever—which can’t happen until she introduces her tattooed, pierced, and scarred boyfriend to her father and three over-protective brothers.

Must fight for love in the light…

Haunted by a childhood tragedy and the loss of his family, Caden never thought he’d find the love he shares with Makenna. But the deeper he falls, the more he fears the devastation sure to come if he ever lost her, too. When meeting her family doesn’t go smoothly, Caden questions whether Makenna deserves someone better, stronger, and just more…normal. Maybe they’re too different—and he’s far too damaged—after all…

Love in the Light (Hearts in Darkness #2) by Laura Kaye

Makenna James and Caden Grayson met under strange circumstances. Stuck in an elevator for hours with no light and only their conversation to keep them company and soothe their fears. They took their initial meeting and turned it into so much more. Caden has a lot of demons, he tries to fix on his own. He is haunted by the deaths of his mother and younger brother in a car crash he survived fourteen years ago. Caden believes he is getting passed his anxiety but as his relationship with Makenna grows more with each day his anxiety worsens. He is so desperately afraid of losing someone he cares about again that he falls into a deep depression. Believing Makenna deserves someone before, someone normal he walks away from the one person who can bring him into the light.

”He’d stopped trusting her…not to abandon him. And so he’d done the leaving. He’d made is own worst fears come true.”—Caden Grayson

”There is nothing more than you for me.”—Makenna James

Ok so I didn’t realize how much I wanted this sequel until I knew it was coming out. Then I thought ‘Oh that’s nice, I’ll read it when it comes out’. When I received the ARC for my blog I was started reading never expecting the story that I was about to be drawn into. I loved how Caden and Makenna met in the first book so I couldn’t wait to read how they ended up. The beginning of the book takes us through Makenna and Caden’s new and passionate relationship. The chemistry they shared in the elevator was still there and grew stronger as the book progressed.  I really enjoyed getting to know them as a couple. Even though they seemed to be in a nice place within their relationship we definitely see Caden’s insecurities, anxieties and fears threatening to ruin their relationship.  Especially after he meets her family and it doesn’t go as well as he had hoped. From there Caden is on a downward spiral and Makenna is at a loss not knowing how to help the man she is falling in love with.

”I still love…that elevator.”

I was really impressed with how Laura Kaye handled the PTSD and depression issues in this book. Caden broke my heart as he continually battled his survivor’s guilt. Makenna tried to be there for him but ultimately it was Caden who had to pull himself out of his depression and realize what he had in front of him. A life worth fighting for, a life worth living because he was worth it. Depression and PTSD is not something to be taken lightly. These are serious issues that affect many people and sometimes unbeknownst to their loved ones. I think the author did a service to her readers by bringing this illness to light. This was not just a love story this was a survivor’s story.

I don’t believe you need to read the first book to understand what is going on in this book but I highly recommend “Hearts in Darkness” because it will make you fall in love with this wonderful realistic couple.
