Ok so I didn’t realize how much I wanted this sequel until I knew it was coming out. Then I thought ‘Oh that’s nice, I’ll read it when it comes out’. When I received the ARC for my blog I was started reading never expecting the story that I was about to be drawn into. I loved how Caden and Makenna met in the first book so I couldn’t wait to read how they ended up. The beginning of the book takes us through Makenna and Caden’s new and passionate relationship. The chemistry they shared in the elevator was still there and grew stronger as the book progressed. I really enjoyed getting to know them as a couple. Even though they seemed to be in a nice place within their relationship we definitely see Caden’s insecurities, anxieties and fears threatening to ruin their relationship. Especially after he meets her family and it doesn’t go as well as he had hoped. From there Caden is on a downward spiral and Makenna is at a loss not knowing how to help the man she is falling in love with.

I was really impressed with how Laura Kaye handled the PTSD and depression issues in this book. Caden broke my heart as he continually battled his survivor’s guilt. Makenna tried to be there for him but ultimately it was Caden who had to pull himself out of his depression and realize what he had in front of him. A life worth fighting for, a life worth living because he was worth it. Depression and PTSD is not something to be taken lightly. These are serious issues that affect many people and sometimes unbeknownst to their loved ones. I think the author did a service to her readers by bringing this illness to light. This was not just a love story this was a survivor’s story.
I don’t believe you need to read the first book to understand what is going on in this book but I highly recommend “Hearts in Darkness” because it will make you fall in love with this wonderful realistic couple.
